The Three Gossips, Arches NP

“The Three Gossips” is a formation of Entrada Sandstone in the Courthouse Towers area of Arches National Park in Utah, western USA. All three eroded ‘towers’ are around the same height, the tallest of which is c350′.

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand grains compacted ‘cemented’ together through thousands of years of weight pressure. The Entrada Sandstone of Arches M.P. is divided into three ‘members, the Dewey Bridge Member, the Main Body member and the Moab Tongue member.

This member of Entrada Sandstone is responsible for theformation of the most visually stunning features of the Park, the “arches” themselves. It is highly visible from the main road through the park, making up The GreatWall, The Windows, the base of Delicate Arch, the fins of the Fiery Furnace, and the Marching Men. These features often tower a few hundred feet above the main level of the Park. The massive sandstone, mainly eolian in origin, is made of fine-grained reddish and orangish-brown sands cemented with calcite and iron-oxides . The source for the soils that form on and around this sandstone is often local eolian sands from the Entrada itself.
