Red-fronted lemur sitting on a branch

A wild, male Red-fronted Lemur, aka Red-fronted Brown Lemur, Eulemur rufifrons, on a branch in Isalo National Park, south-west Madagascar.

Red-fronted Lemurs are unusual in being a lemur species which are not female-dominant. They live in permanent social groups of between 4 and 18 individuals, in moist forests in south-eastern Madagascar. Their main diet is fruits and leaves. Virtually all wild young are born in September and October.

In the picnic site in Isalo National Park these lemurs, with the Ring-tailed Lemurs, were very bold. This female snatched a banana which one of my travel companions just wasn’t holding tightly enough – yes, she stole it out of her hand as she was eating it!

Doesn’t she look furtive!
