My first two short visits to the Grand Canyon were in mid-October, so I was only able to vist the South Rim (North Rim is closed from 15th October until 15th May), so the third time I was pleased to be able to visit the North Rim, for a ‘change of view’. Only 10% of Grand Canyon visitors visit the North Rim. South Rim is easier to get to, even on a side trip from e.g. Las Vegas.
Mt Hayden is the best-known landmark in the North Rim area, and this is the classic view of it from Point Imperial. It is c8360’/2550m in height. Various strata of rock can be seen in this image. Mt Hayden itself is formed of Cococino Sandstone, which is cream-coloured and originated in sand dunes deposited there 265 million years ago, and stands on reddish Permian Hermit Formation rock.
