Cape Buffalo with Cattle Egret

A lone male Cape Buffalo, Syncerus caffer, with Cattle Egret, Bubulcus ibis, on its shoulder in Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya, East Africa.

Cattle Egrets often hitch rides on large herbivores – even Elephants – and fly down to the ground to feed on invertebrates stirred up as the animal walks.

Old male African Buffalos often leave the large herds to live on their own or with one or a very few other old bulls. One of our guides said, “The old men like to talk about their problems!” These are the ones which can be dangerous, and are said to the the only animal Masai fear.
