Male Eurasian Bullfinch

A male Eurasian Bullfinch, Pyrrhula pyrrhula, (usually just called ‘Bullfinch’) perching in a Fuchsia shrub in my garden, just outside my front window. This one was a real poser, and stayed around the same area for quite a while as I went to get my camera, opened the blinds, repoisitioned myself to avoid the house across the road in the background. He was surprisingly obliging; often they are quite skittish.

Bullfinches are usually seen in pairs or small groups, but this one appeared to be on his own, and when he eventually flew away, no other Bullfinch joined it.

Bullfinches get their name from their thick necks and round heads. They feed preferentially on buds As this photo was taken in January, buds were in short supply so it was feeding on Fuchsia berries, but in my garden they also like Leycesteria formosa berries. In the UK, Bullfinches are Amber-listed.
